Are you a fan of mung beans? Or maybe you have heard about how healthy they are? Then this post is for you. I want to tell you how easy it is to sprout mung beans in your own kitchen and without fancy and expensive equipment. Not only is it simple, but it’s also incredibly nutritious and full of flavor. So let’s get started with the basics of sprouting mung beans!
Sprouted mung beans are a great source of fiber, protein, and vitamins. You will only need a bowl, some water and a J-Cloth or some cheese cloth. And a couple of days of course!
How to Select the Best Mung Beans for Sprouting
The first step in sprouting mung beans is to select the right proper beans. You want to look for even-sized beans that are free from discoloration or marks. Avoid buying pre-packaged mung beans if you can since they might be treated with pesticides chemicals which may affect the sprouting process. Opt instead for purchasing them from a health food store or online where you can find organic beans.
How to Prepare Mung Beans for Sprouting
Mung beans require soaking before they can be sprouted, so make sure you plan ahead. My process takes approximately two and a half days. So if you start today, your sprouts will be ready on the third day from today.
Start by filling a bowl with water and adding 1 cup of dry mung beans into it. Soak overnight.

The next morning, drain and rinse the beans with water. Wet the J-Cloth or cheesecloth and cover the beans. Leave undisturbed in a dark area in your kitchen. Make sure to rinse them once a day while they’re sprouting. This helps keep the moisture levels consistent which encourages healthy growth of the sprouts.

After about 2-3 days, your mung bean sprouts should be ready for harvesting! The number of days it takes depends on factors such as humidity levels in your kitchen, temperature, etc. Give the little green gems a final rinse.

Sprouting mung beans is such an easy way to increase your intake of healthy vitamins and minerals. Whether you choose to eat them raw as part of salads or stir fries, there are endless possibilities when it comes to enjoying these delicious little legumes! All it takes is some prep work beforehand plus a bit of patience while waiting on those beautiful little white shoots – and voila! You’ll have yourself some tasty homemade mung bean sprouts ready for snacking on.
One of these days, I’ll post a recipe to make a soup or “dal” with sprouted mung but for now, here’s a quick salad that I love to make:
3/4 cup sprouted mung beans
1/4 cup finely chopped tomato
1/4 cup finely chopped red onion
1/4 cup finely chopped cucumber
1/4 of any other vegetable of your choice (I like to use carrot or colourful bell peppers)
1 tbsp lime juice
2 tbsp chopped cilantro
Himalayan salt (or any other salt) to taste
-Mix everything and serve. Crunchy, colourful and oh so delicious!
