In this post I have provided recipes to 8 easy drinks that include ginger as one of the ingredients. You may be living under a rock if you haven’t heard about how healthy ginger is! The taste of ginger might not please the palate of people who are not used to it but believe me, give it a try and you will be hooked. Or use a bit less than I have suggested in the recipes below and still reap the rewards of this miracle ingredient.
I am a huge fan of ginger and try to sneak it into as many drinks and food dishes as possible. Both for its digestive healing properties and taste.
Buy a large piece of ginger root and blend it to a paste. It keeps well in the fridge for up to two weeks or a bit longer depending on the freshness of the root when you bought it. It’s so convenient – just scoop the amount you need and voila!
I won’t bore you with all the known health benefits of ginger in this post but will tell you that ginger has been used for a very long time to improve digestion and other conditions. If you are curious however, you can find the benefits here.
I regularly make all the drinks below and hope you enjoy them as much as I do!
Blending Ginger
Trust me, if you keep a jar of blended ginger in your fridge, you will be more likely to use it and enjoy the health benefits. Once this is done, you have no excuse not to use it.
Take one medium sized root of ginger and roughly chop into pieces. You can get a large-sized one once you are convinced you will use it often. I recommend keeping the skin on and just discarding only the very rough or dirty parts. Ginger peel contains a lot of nutrients and does not alter the taste of drinks or food.
Put the pieces into a blender. Add 1/2 cup water and blend until you have a paste. Add more water if the ginger is not turning into a paste. Similarly, add less water if your root is small in size. Some people prefer a more rough texture. Just adjust the amount of water to blend to your liking.
Store the mixture in the fridge for up to two weeks. I have often kept it longer. Particularly if the piece of root I had was very fresh.
Here are 8 recipes you will fall in love with that have ginger in them. Now that you are ready with the ginger paste, we can get started!
Simple Ginger Tea
1 Tbsp ground ginger
2 cups hot water
1 lemon slice (optional)
1 tsp honey (optional)
Heat two cups of water in a pan until boiling. Add ginger into the water and reduce to a simmer for 10 minutes. You can add chopped ginger or larger “coins” if you wish but additional boiling would be required. You will notice that the colour of the water has changed from clear to a very light yellow.
At this point, you can add a slice of lemon and/or a teaspoon of honey. It’s totally up to you. Both the lemon and honey add nutrition and taste.
There is no reason why you can’t boil the water in a kettle. Same process, boil water in a kettle, pour into a cup and add ginger and other ingredients.
Mulled Apple Cider with Ginger
1 L store bought apple cider
1Tbsp ground ginger
4 cloves
2 cinnamon sticks
4 Cardamom pods
4 star anise
Slices of orange (optional)
2 tsp pomegranate seeds (optional)
This drink is a favourite in our family from the time the leaves change colour in the Fall right up to Spring. This drink is as comforting as it is lovely to look at. The warm flavour of apple mixed with the eclectic mix of spices is a delight and your kitchen will smell like apples and cinnamon. Try this out on a cold day – I promise you will love it.
- Pour the apple cider into a slow cooker or in a large pot on the stove. I like to use a slow cooker but either method works great.
- Add the ginger and spices.
- Bring the heat to low and set the timer for 4 hours. If you are using the stove, simply bring to a simmer and leave it along for 20-30 minutes simmering until the aroma fills your kitchen.
- Serve warm.
Orange, Celery and Ginger Juice
This is an unlikely combination but this drink is quite refreshing. Oranges have immunity boosting properties and you probably heard that they help your body produce collagen. Who doesn’t need a little help with that?! I know I do! Combined with celery and ginger, this combination gives you a refreshing drink. Try it after doing chores or exercising. I’ve given you the recipe for a single glass. You can scale up if you need to make a jug full.
1 glass orange juice
1 tsp ground ginger
Pinch of salt
1.2 tsp lime or lemon juice
1 celery stalk
- Use a juicer or powerful mix and mix the orange juice, ginger and celery through a juicer.
- Strain and stir in lime or lemon juice. Pour into a glass.
- Add the salt.
- Serve cold.
Alkaline Water
This is another refreshing drink to try. Some say that alkaline water goes a long way in helping prevent disease due to its higher pH level than tap water. Go ahead and experiment with the amounts depending on your taste buds! This recipe fills a jug so scale down if you need to.
1/2 medium cucumber sliced
2 Tbsp ground ginger
Juice from 1 lemon
1/2 cut mint leaves
- Put all ingredients in a jug. Leave them to rest like that overnight.
- In the morning, strain the ingredients and enjoy!
Coconut Ginger Tonic
Choose this drink for taste or it’s rehydration capabilities or both. Coconut water is full of electrolytes and potassium. If you like the taste of coconuts, you will love this! Try it cold on a hot day.
8 oz coconut water
1 tsp ground ginger
1/2 Tbsp lemon juice
Mint leaves
- Just combine everything in a glass and you’re good to go!
Matcha, Ginger and Lemon Power Boost
As you will see, this is a super blast of healthy ingredients. Make this drink in the winter when the mornings and early evenings are dark, and you need a little pick-me-up. This drink is so full of good stuff that you can’t go wrong. It might seem as though everything but the kitchen sink is in the drink but just take a look at the individual ingredients and you will appreciate the qualities of this drink. Adjust the amounts of the ingredients to match your likings.
1/2 cup water
1/2 apple with skin
1 tsp matcha powder
1 Tbsp lemon juice
1 tsp ground ginger
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp honey
1 clove garlic (bet you didn’t expect this one!)
Pinch of ground pepper (eliminate if you can’t tolerate hot spice)
Pinch of cayenne pepper (eliminate if you can’t tolerate hot spice)
- Mix everything in a blender and strain any solids.
Green Tea With Ginger
Reap the benefits of green tea with this lovely concoction. This recipe is flexible and you can add the optional ingredients or not!
1 cup of warm green tea
1 tsp ground ginger
1 tsp honey (optional)
1 slice lemon (optional)
Mint leaves (optional)
Mix the ginger into the green tea. Add any or all optional ingredients and enjoy! Simple as that!
Indian Masala Tea (Chai)
I absolutely cannot end this post without Masala Tea. This tea is made with much love each and every morning in our household. We make it with tea and milk most days but this recipe has multiple variations. One of these days, I will post some of the alternative ways of making chai. There are so many!
The tea is boiled so is safe for those of you who are lactose intolerant. If you get good quality tea leaves, your kitchen will be filled with a wonderful almost sweet fragrance.
3/4 cup water
1/2 cup milk
2 heaping tsp black tea leaves
1 tsp ground ginger
2 tsp sugar (reduce to 1 tsp if you don’t like too sweet tea)
Optional: mint leaves, cinnamon, cloves, cardamom
- Bring the water to a boil and add the tea leaves.
- Add the mint leaves and cinnamon, cloves and cardamom if you are using these.
- Add the sugar.
- Add ginger.
- When the mixture has been boiling for 2 minutes, go ahead and add the milk. Give it all a good mix.
- Let the tea come to a boil. The milk in the tea will cause the tea to expand. Turn of the heat just before the tea boils over the tip of your pot.
- Strain the solids and pour into a cup.
- Enjoy!
