Here is a recipe for a power drink that is nutritious and surprisingly tasty. It will help you feel awake and alert. At first glance, the combination of ingredients might seem odd and they are! But give it a try and you won’t regret it. One word comes to mind – vitality! Who doesn’t want a bit of vitality – am I right?
For the longest time, I was trying to put together the ultimate health drink with ingredients I always have at home.. I think I’ve come very close. There are a decent number of ingredients in the drink so I suggest making a batch that you can use for 2-3 drinks. It may not be the kind of drink you want to make every day.
Smoothies are all the rage these days but I often find them to be too sweet. This drink is not too sweet, not too bitter and not too sour. It is tasty enough to enjoy and yet doesn’t taste like dessert in a drink. That’s not at all what I was going for. You might find it odd the first time you drink it but please give it a chance. Your body and mind will thank you for it.
Each ingredient is a star and incredibly nutritious in its own right. Together this drink is a tasty and almost medicinal tonic! Go ahead and increase or decrease the amounts as you please. If your system goes into shock if you have red chili powder, then reduce or eliminate it! If you prefer sweeter drinks, include honey or a bit of banana. No guilt here – pure raw honey or banana is still good for you.
1/2 cup water
1 apple with skin (red or green)
1 small clove garlic
1/2 inch ginger
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp turmeric
pinch of freshly ground black pepper
pinch of red chili pepper powder
1 tsp olive oil
1/2 lemon juice
**Optional:
1 tbsp honey
1 tbsp matcha powder
Gather all the ingredients – let’s begin!

Chop the apples into small pieces to facilitate blending and keep the skin on. I am a big believer in including as much fibre into the food we eat as possible. Green apples are more tart than the red varieties but you will benefit from consuming less sugar. I have used a red gala apple here but it is a pretty small one! I also used commercial lemon juice but usually use fresh lemon juice.

Put all the ingredients into a blender. I used a Magic Bullet since I was just making a single serving. Use a larger blending appliance if you plan to make more of the drink.
Blend away.

I personally do not strain the mixture because I love drinking it with a wide straw and getting all the wonderful fibre from the apple. If that’s just not your thing, go ahead and strain the solid and drink the liquid only. You will still benefit from the nutrients!
This drink is not meant to be a colourful, pretty, tropical looking drink. It is meant to be a refreshing and super healthy drink. And that’s exactly what it is. It doesn’t pretend to be anything else. I hope you can appreciate the amount of good stuff in here. I did use matcha in my version. Some days, I don’t and the drink looks a little different.

The wonderful thing about healthy drinks is that you can customize them. If you like a certain fruit or vegetable in your drinks. Add it in! If you like celery, include it! If you like dates, go ahead and add them! I would only suggest you stick to the main ingredients I included and just build on that if you need.
Here is a little comparison of green apples vs red apples. I love how they compared the nutritional aspects of both. You decide which one you want to use!
